The Secretary-General of the United Nations calls for an "immediate" calm in Gaza and Israel

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Friday for an immediate de-escalation and an end to hostilities in the Gaza Strip and Israel.

Guterres said, in a tweet on the "Twitter" site for social networking, "Out of respect for the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, I call for an immediate halt to escalation and an end to the hostilities in Gaza and Israel."

"A large number of innocent civilians have died. This conflict will only lead to an increase in militancy and extremism in the entire region," he added.

The Israeli occupation army is intensifying its air and artillery bombardment on Gaza, in an unprecedented way, amid conflicting news about the beginning of the incursion into Gaza, or only the preparation for the incursion.

The Israeli ground and air forces continue to bomb the Gaza Strip, causing more than 115 martyrs so far and wounding hundreds of others.
