American Heart Association: Carbohydrate-rich snacks put you at risk of heart disease

A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association revealed that eating starchy snacks exposes you to at least a 50% risk of death, and also puts you at a 44-57% risk of dying from cardiovascular disease in particular, according to a report published in Medical Express.

The study confirmed that replacing those snacks with a share of fruits, vegetables or dairy products contributes to reducing the risk of death from cardiovascular disease or cancer, as the study aims to examine the effects of some meals on your health in the long run.

The researchers were based on an assessment of a number of dietary patterns, based on a national survey conducted on 21 participants from 2003 to 2014, in the United States and all participants were 30 years old or older at the start of the study, where researchers classified the participants' dietary patterns by analyzing types of food. What they ate in different meals, and determine the types of grains and dairy products that are eaten as well.

The researchers pointed out that the Western diet is higher in fat and protein, which is similar to many North American diets, as it relies on servings of refined grains, solid fats, cheese, added sugars and processed meats.

The researchers found that eating meals that included cereals, cheese and meat increased the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 44%, while replacing those meals with portions of fruit reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease by 34%.

The researchers confirmed that eating a vegetarian dinner based on vegetables and fruits led to a decrease in the incidence of cardiovascular diseases by 23% to 31%.

The study confirmed that eating a starchy snack after main meals increased the risk of death by 50 to 52% and the risk of cardiovascular disease-related deaths by 44 to 57%.
