Germany demands the expulsion of all foreign fighters from Libya


German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas expressed his optimism about the surrounding atmosphere ahead of the convening of the new Libya conference today, Wednesday, in Berlin, reiterating his calls for the withdrawal of all foreign fighters and weapons from this Arab country to ensure a peaceful transition there.


And the German news website, Deutsche Welle, quoted Heiko Maas as saying, in statements he made before the Berlin conference today, as saying, "I hope that the second international talks in support of Libya, which will be held in Berlin, will lead to the strengthening of the transitional government so that the Libyans can" take the fate of their country. in their hands."


The German Foreign Minister explained that the elections scheduled for next December 24 should go ahead, saying, "We will continue to cooperate for them alongside the Libyan government and the United Nations."


He added that only two years ago, Libya was threatening to sink into a cycle of chaos and violence, adding that tangible progress had been made through perseverance and close cooperation with the United Nations, exemplified by the ceasefire in force since last October and the formation of a national unity government. It gives the people of Libya reason to hope."


The foreign ministers of the United States, Russia, China, Turkey and Egypt are taking part in the Berlin talks, the second meeting in the German capital to discuss the situation in the North African country.


Previous talks, held in January last year, had discussed efforts to withdraw foreign soldiers and weapons from Libya. According to the latest United Nations data, there are still about 20,000 foreign fighters in the country.


Yesterday, Tuesday, Maas received Libyan Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Dabaiba and Foreign Minister Najla Al-Manqoush, where he said on Twitter that Germany would continue its support for peace and stability in Libya.
