The Arab League stresses the importance of the media's role in enriching comprehensive development paths


Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, supervising the media and communication sector, stressed the central importance of the media in enriching the paths of economic, social, human rights and environmental development, within a framework of integration among all partners, including governments, elected bodies, the private sector, university institutions and civil society organizations.

Khattabi stressed, at the graduation ceremony for students of the Faculty of Language and Media at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport at the Academy’s headquarters in the Smart Village, that the Corona pandemic showed the extent of the media’s role in spreading preventive awareness and dealing with the repercussions of this unprecedented health, social and economic crisis, as well as fighting false rumors and misleading content that It spread with the outbreak of the pandemic through some media or through social networks.

 

In his speech distributed by the Arab League today, Khattabi praised the efforts of the Academy's President, Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghaffar, who spares no effort - in cooperation with the deans and professors at the Academy - in establishing the most successful creative curricula in the field of teaching in various disciplines, including the media, in an openness to multiple partnerships across the world.

 

He said: The biggest bet for the success of our joint Arab action remains in the extent of the ability to elevate strategies and programs into tangible actions, especially with regard to developing human capabilities and ensuring quality education, which is one of the priorities of the sustainable development goals.

 

He pointed out that this participatory nature is the essence of the agenda set by the international community in September 2015 to deal with urgent development challenges until 2030, including fighting poverty, securing the necessities for a decent life, strengthening the rule of law and pillars of institutional governance, integrating a gender approach in national plans, and encouraging Investing in scientific research and innovation, and facing the risks posed by climate change.

 

He pointed out that this agenda remains, given the current indicators, in need of more bold solidarity initiatives to build a better collective future for the younger generations in an integrated synergy between the national, regional and global dimensions.

 

He pointed out that the Council of Arab Information Ministers was keen, during its last session (the 51st session), held at the headquarters of the League of Arab States on June 16, to devote the vital role of the media in the development field, by adopting a work program to implement the objectives of the media map for sustainable development, and assigning the General Secretariat of the Arab League (Media and Communication Sector) to follow up its implementation with Member States, organizations and unions practicing media tasks. The Council of Information Ministers also adopted a comprehensive guide for media professionals in the field of sustainable development, confirming the involvement of the Arab League, within a unified Arab vision, in the paths to achieving the sustainable development goals.

 

Khattabi stressed that spreading the culture of responsible citizenship is the priority of the media message that everyone knows the sanctity of the trust entrusted to it in light of the amazing transformations of the new media, based on its influential role in immunizing societies from extremism and closing tendencies, and protecting individuals from malicious rumors through purposeful and constructive educational media. Including in times of crisis.

 

He called for the completion of graduation projects on media and sustainable development at the Academy because it is an opportunity to highlight the serious involvement of university youth in the dynamics of construction and development and the employment of diverse media in the service of the ambitious vision 2030, stressing that no real development can be achieved without effective media action within a credible system committed to advancing The development process is in line with the energies, capabilities and qualifications of our Arab countries.
