7.70% decrease in the number of FMD foci in 2020


Today, Tuesday, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics issued the annual bulletin of statistics on animal and poultry diseases for the year 2020, and one of its most important indicators is that the number of foci of livestock infection with foot-and-mouth disease reached 12 in 2020 compared to 41 in 2019 with a decrease of 70%, due to this decrease In order not to infect livestock with a new strain of foot-and-mouth disease.


The governorates of Cairo, Port Said, Dakahlia, Qalyubia, and Minya recorded the highest rate of FMD infection with 2 foci each with a rate of 16.7 percent, followed by the governorates of Beheira and Sohag with 1 foci, each with a rate of 3.8%.


The incidence of lumpy skin disease reached 20 spots in 2020, compared to 21 spots in 2019, with a decrease of 4.8 percent, and this is due to the effectiveness of the treatment methods, serums and vaccines used.


Matrouh governorate recorded the highest incidence of nodular skin disease with 5 foci, 0.25% of the total number of foci, and the lowest number was in the governorates of Sharkia, Kafr El-Sheikh, Menoufia, Ismailia and Assiut, where only one foci were recorded for each of them.


The number of FMD vaccinations for cattle and sheep reached 5.6 million cases in 2020, compared to 9.7 million cases in 2019, a decrease of 41.9 percent. Menoufia governorate recorded the highest number of vaccinations with 724 thousand cases, followed by 12.8 percent. Beheira 567,000 cases, at a rate of 10.0%, then Al Sharqiya governorate with 493,000 cases, or 7.8% of the total number of immunization cases, and Cairo governorate came in with the least number, with 9,5 thousand cases, or 10.7 percent.


The number of livestock and animals that were treated for internal diseases reached 567,000 cases in 2020, compared to 611 thousand cases in 2019, a decrease of 1.7%, and Menoufia governorate recorded the highest percentage, reaching 61 thousand cases, at a rate of 10.8%, and Port Said governorate had the lowest percentage, with a number of 1,000. A case of 0.2% of the total number of livestock and animals treated for internal diseases.


The number of poultry influenza infection foci reached 66 in 2020 compared to 40 in 2019 with an increase of 65%. This increase is due to the ineffectiveness of the vaccine and the vaccines used.


Qalyubia governorate recorded the highest rate of bird flu infection, as the number of foci reached 14, with a rate of 21.21%, followed by the governorates of Ismailia and Giza, with 9, each with a rate of 13.6 percent, followed by Dakahlia Governorate, with a rate of 10.7% of the total number of foci. And the lowest rate of infection in the governorates of Sharkia, Menoufia, Beheira and Aswan, where only one focus was recorded for each of them.


The number of poultry treated for internal diseases amounted to 2.2 million cases in 2020, compared to 1.4 million cases in 2019, a decrease of 45.6 percent, as a result of chick vaccination and good veterinary care to prevent diseases.


The numbers of protective viral vaccines that were produced amounted to 3.3 million doses in 2020, compared to 2.2 million cases in 2019, an increase of 52.6 percent due to the state's tendency to produce them locally to protect them from diseases.
