Italian agency: Europe announces aid to Italy to deal with forest fires

The European Commission announced the provision of practical assistance to Italy to deal with forest fires on the island of Sardinia, within the framework of the civil protection mechanism, according to the Italian agency "AKI".

The commission indicated, in a statement today, that it had coordinated the dispatch of four French and Greek planes to assist the Italian authorities in fighting the fires.

In this context, the European Commissioner in charge of Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Janis Linaric, confirmed that the EU's emergency center is in close contact with the Italian authorities to follow up on the developments of the situation, and said: "We are ready to coordinate additional aid if necessary."

The competent authorities say that the fires are caused by a very high temperature in that area.

Several fires broke out in the forests of the Italian island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean, and about 1,500 people were evacuated, due to the high temperatures that reached 40 degrees Celsius, and there were no reports of deaths or injuries so far, according to the Italian newspaper, "Al Corriere".

The newspaper pointed out that thousands of hectares, amounting to 20,000 hectares, were burned, homes and shops were destroyed, and animals were killed in the Oristano region, so Italy resorted to asking for immediate support for an unprecedented disaster.

Residents of the town of Coglieri were particularly affected, with authorities evacuated 200 people and 155 others from the Cinar region in July, although some were able to return to their homes early Sunday, according to the Italian newspaper, Nova Sardina.
