Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov expressed his confidence that Russian and American diplomats could reach a compromise on the issue of border crossings in Syria.
"It is difficult to predict today the outcome of discussions in the UN Security Council. I know that there are ideas on the part of both the United States and Russia, just as there are ideas of the member states of the Council," Antonov said in televised statements, reported by the "Russia Today" satellite channel this evening, Wednesday. Security".
The Russian ambassador to Washington called for giving time to the Russian and American teams to find a solution to this issue, and said: "I am confident that they will find a compromise. I hope that this solution will take into account the concerns of Russia and the United States, and the interests of the Syrian people regarding their life and stability."
It is noteworthy that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, called on the members of the Security Council recently to overcome their differences over the ways of delivering humanitarian aid to Syria, so that "millions of Syrians in need of humanitarian aid can obtain it through all available channels."
Among the most prominent differences between the members of the Security Council is the issue of extending the powers of the mechanism for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria across its borders.
Western countries insist on the need to maintain the mechanism that allows the delivery of aid through Turkey to areas in the Syrian province of Idlib that are under the control of the opposition factions.
For its part, Moscow objects to extending this mechanism, which expires this month, on the grounds that the aid is better delivered to Idlib through other Syrian governorates and under the supervision of Damascus.
