Pentagon spokesman John Kirby confirmed that the remaining US forces in Afghanistan will retain the powers to protect the Afghan forces, and Kirby did not clarify during a press conference today, Friday, for how long the US forces will retain those powers, according to "Russia Today".
Kirby confirmed the handover of the Bagram air base to the Afghan forces, considering it one of the important events in the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
He also stated that US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin approved a plan to hand over command of the American force in Afghanistan from General Scott Miller to General Frank McKenzie, and Kirby did not explain the reason for the change of leadership.
It is noteworthy that the United States announced that it will withdraw its forces from Afghanistan by next September 11, and it is scheduled to keep about 650 military personnel to protect the American diplomatic mission and help secure Kabul Airport, and media reports indicate that the American forces are on the verge of completing the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
