The Sudan Security and Defense Council held an emergency session, during which it discussed important and urgent issues related to local and regional peace and security in light of the renewed phenomenon of societal violence, and developments in the Renaissance Dam file.
Sudanese Defense Minister and Council Rapporteur Lieutenant-General Yassin Ibrahim said that the Council heard a report on the outcomes of the UN Security Council session on the Renaissance Dam, and the practical options and steps to complete Sudan's efforts to preserve the rights and legal guarantees binding on all parties.
The Council praised the efforts made by the Supreme Committee of the Renaissance Dam and the negotiating delegation to reach the UN Security Council, and decided to hold an urgent meeting of the Supreme Committee of the Renaissance Dam, in the city of Roseires (South Sudan), followed by a special session of the Security and Defense Council in Roseires.
The Council renewed its firm position on the crucial issues that affect national security and threaten peace.
In the meantime, the Security and Defense Council expressed its regret for the events that occurred in eastern Sudan and South Kordofan (Southern Republic of Sudan), and had mercy on the lives of the victims in those events, reviewing the causes and motives that led to the renewal of tribal conflicts, as well as the shortcomings and remedies and radical solutions.
The Council took several decisions, the most important of which were sending military reinforcements to maintain community security in the Red Sea and South Kordofan, intensifying internal security operations in residential neighborhoods that are hotbeds of violence, and intensifying humanitarian aid efforts in the affected areas.
