The US ambassador to the United Nations said that the UN Security Council has expressed its concern over the crisis in Somalia regarding holding new elections.
Last month, the term of Somali President Muhammad Abdullah Muhammad’s term expired without choosing his successor. The Somali parliament was supposed to elect a new president on February 8th, but the election was postponed because no new lawmakers have yet been selected.
US Ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield said in a hypothetical press conference after a closed session of the 15-member Security Council that the council "indicated the ongoing efforts to reach agreement between leaders of the federal government in Somalia and leaders of federal states" to implement a modified electoral model.
She added that the members of the Council expressed their concern over the continuing impasse and called on "Somali leaders to engage in constructive dialogue as soon as possible without preconditions to resolve the outstanding disputes."
