A lactic acid blood test reveals the causes of rapid breathing

Lactic acid is made by muscle tissue and red blood cells transport oxygen from the lung to the rest of the body, and when the level of oxygen in the body is normal, the carbohydrates are decomposed into water and carbon dioxide, and when the level of oxygen is low, carbohydrates are converted into energy and lactic acid is produced. The amount of lactic acid in the blood to detect many health problems will be shown in the following lines according to a webmed report.

Symptoms of a high level of lactic acid in the blood

Lactic acid levels that are higher than normal can lead to a condition called lactic acidosis if severe enough, can upset the body's pH balance, indicating the acid level in the blood.Lactic acidosis can lead to these symptoms:

Muscle weakness, rapid breathing, vomiting, sweating, coma.

How is the test done?

It is a simple blood test. Your doctor will draw blood from a vein or artery using a needle. In rare cases, they may take a sample of cerebrospinal fluid from the spine during a procedure called a spinal tap.

Analysis results

If your lactic acid level is normal, this means that you are not suffering from lactic acidosis. Your cells are producing enough oxygen and also telling your doctor that something other than lactic acidosis is causing your symptoms. They will likely order other tests to find out what they are. If your lactic acid level is high, It may be caused by a number of things most often, due to a condition that makes it difficult for you to breathe enough oxygen. Some of these conditions may include:

Heart attack, congestive heart failure, severe lung disease or respiratory failure, fluid accumulation in your lungs, very low red blood cell count (severe anemia).

A higher than normal level of lactic acid in your blood could be a sign of problems with your metabolism and your body may need more oxygen than usual because you have one of the following conditions:

Liver disease, kidney disease, uncontrolled diabetes, leukemia, high levels of lactic acid can also mean that you are not getting enough vitamin B1.
