On Friday, the United States appointed veteran American diplomat Jeffrey Feltman as a special envoy for the Horn of Africa, at a time when Washington is moving to intensify its diplomatic efforts in the region.
"According to American media," US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a statement that Feltman would lead international efforts to end the tension between Ethiopia and Sudan and the tension resulting from the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
After Feltman held senior positions at the US State Department, he served as Head of Political Affairs at the United Nations from 2012 to 2018, a position that helps shape international organization policy and oversee its mediation efforts.
Prior to his work at the United Nations, the American diplomat held the position of Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs in President Barack Obama's administration, and before that he worked as the United States' ambassador to Lebanon, head of the Coalition Provisional Authority office in the Iraqi governorate of Erbil, and a senior official at the US consulate in Jerusalem.
