200 OSCE experts concluded a 3-day international webinar on enhancing efforts in conflict prevention and resolution as well as post-conflict rehabilitation and peacebuilding.
The symposium was held under the Swedish presidency of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the European Organization.
Helga Schmidt, Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, said - in a statement - that the symposium discussed the role of women and civil society in early warning and peace processes, as well as ways to enhance the capacities of the OSCE. To address the root causes of tensions and instability.
She added that the symposium focused on the need for joint work to identify the best ways to employ and enhance the current set of tools, and that everyone addressed the importance of implementing the women, peace and security agenda.
To build confidence in peace efforts, she noted, "we need to advance the women, peace and security agenda and ensure the effective and meaningful participation of women in all stages of conflict resolution and peace building."
"Conflicts are rarely one-dimensional, as most of them are rooted in issues such as political polarization, social and economic inequalities, environmental degradation, and deficiencies in the rule of law and the security sector," she added.
She stressed the need to comprehensively address the root causes by building and strengthening the relevant institutional capacities and building public confidence in these institutions.
