Stefan Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said that according to the organization's officials in Myanmar, we are calling for the immediate release of dozens of journalists who are still in detention since the Myanmar army seized power on February 1.
Dujarric pointed out that since the Myanmar coup, at least 88 journalists have been arrested, including an American reporter who was detained at Yangon airport on Monday, and to this day at least 52 journalists are still in detention and the licenses of eight media outlets were withdrawn on May 12, he was convicted. One journalist was imprisoned for three years.
Dujarric added that the arrest of journalists and the violence used by the army against anyone who was arrested while trying to report or record his actions constituted an extraordinary attack on freedom of expression in Myanmar.
