The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Abul-Gheit, held a session of talks with Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, on the sidelines of his visit to New York to participate in the Security Council session held on Thursday on the situation in Libya.
An official source in the General Secretariat stated that Aboul Gheit and Guterres discussed during their meeting a number of important regional issues, crises and developments and ways to coordinate positions to deal with them.
The source added that with regard to the situation in Libya, Abul-Gheit affirmed the League’s support for the path led by the United Nations through its envoy, Jan Kubis, to produce positive results from the Libyan political dialogue, stressing the importance of all parties’ commitment to holding the elections on their scheduled date, which is December 24, and providing Support for the Government of National Unity to carry out its tasks in this regard.
The source added that the talks also touched on the Palestinian issue, as Abul-Gheit stressed the importance of starting to pave the way for the resumption of political contacts between the Palestinian and Israeli sides so that there is a political horizon for a settlement instead of the complete impasse that the situation has been suffering from for years as a result of the maneuvers of the Israeli side.
He explained that Abul-Gheit commended the efforts of the United Nations to revitalize the international dimension of those efforts by trying to revitalize the International Quartet and find partnerships for it that would allow it to develop its influence.
The source said that the talks also touched on the developments of the situation in Lebanon following the apology of Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri for forming the government, as there was consensus between the two sides on what this apology represents as a warning sign for the situation in Lebanon, which is changing from bad to worse, and Abul-Gheit expressed his hope that The international community will be able to help the Greeks to cross this crisis, which is the most serious since the end of the civil war in the year 90.
The source explained that the meeting also dealt with developments in dealing with the Renaissance Dam file, as Aboul Gheit affirmed the firm position of the Arab League in supporting the demands of Egypt and Sudan to reach a binding legal agreement that would prevent the tyranny of the Ethiopian party to fill and operate the Renaissance Dam without the approval of the transit and downstream countries. Aboul Gheit also commended the United Nations for providing technical support to the African Union to enable it to carry out the task entrusted to it in supervising the negotiations.
The source added that the meeting also touched on regional issues in light of the Iranian elections and the developments of the Iranian nuclear file, as Abul-Gheit affirmed the university's firm position on the issue of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East and the need to find a way out of this crisis, which may have negative repercussions on the overall situation in the Middle East region. . In this context, Abul-Gheit made it clear that the international community is still hopeful that the international community will succeed in ending this situation with the least possible regional losses.
