A Canadian man evaded charges for his overweight baggage by saying he was carrying a bomb inside one of them, officials at Fort Lauderdale Airport in Florida said, according to NBC.
The police bureau revealed in public records that Wigal Rosen's suspension prompted authorities to evacuate three terminals and halt all operations at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for hours.
Police said Rosen, 74, was arrested and charged with making a false report about planting a bomb, explosive or weapon of mass destruction.
According to a complaint from Sheriff Broward's office, Rosen was at the Air Canada office on his way to Toronto when he "get into a heated verbal argument" with an airline employee about an additional baggage charge and the airline's no-cash policy.
The complaint said the employee then told Rosen that he needed to walk from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 to purchase a Visa credit card for his carry-on charge, then left Rosen without his bags, and when the employee told him he needed to take it, Rosen told him there was a bomb in the bag.
According to the complaint, Rosen's suspension caused the evacuation of Terminals 2, 3 and 4, and the complete shutdown of airport operations for more than 4 hours. Rosen is sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
