Merkel: The international community made a mistake in its assessment of the situation in Afghanistan, and what happened is a terrifying development

German Chancellor Angela Merkel admitted that she and other world leaders "underestimated" the Afghan government's ability to resist Taliban attacks.

And she said in a speech a while ago about the Taliban's takeover of Kabul: "This is a very bitter development. Bitter, dramatic and terrifying. It is a terrible development for millions of Afghans who want a more liberal society," German television reported, "Deutsche Welle."

Merkel also noted that the miscalculation was "widespread", referring to incorrect calculations by other leaders, such as US President Joe Biden, about the Afghan government's ability to run the country.

The German chancellor said that the international community was wrong in its assessment of the situation in Afghanistan, and warned of dire consequences.

On the other hand, the American newspaper "The Hill" said that the game of finger-pointing over the fall of Afghanistan began between President Biden and former President Donald Trump amid a chaotic scramble to get American personnel and their allies out of the country before the Taliban's full control.

Biden, who rarely mentions his predecessor, emphasized that the US withdrawal was originally negotiated by the Trump administration and highlighted the former president's plans to invite Taliban leaders to Camp David on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

While Trump, who indicated just months ago that Biden was not out of Afghanistan fast enough, led accusations among Republicans to attack the Biden administration for its handling of the withdrawal. Trump went so far as to call for the president to resign in a statement on Sunday.

This decline casts a shadow over what experts and former government officials say is a chaotic situation that the two leaders had a hand in creating.
