Tokyo and Seoul discuss the attendance of the South Korean president at the Olympic opening ceremony

Japan and South Korea are holding talks about South Korean President Moon Jae-in's attendance of the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics in July, amid escalating tensions between the two neighboring countries over history of war issues, diplomatic sources said Tuesday.

Japan's Kyodo News Agency quoted sources as saying that Tokyo is reluctant to hold a summit between Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and Moon if the latter attends the opening ceremony of the Olympics on July 23.

The sources added that South Korea informed Japan earlier this month that Moon is considering attending the Olympics kick-off ceremony.

Seoul said the visit would be in exchange for former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to South Korea in 2018 to attend the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

A South Korean official said his country hopes to use Moon's presence as an opportunity for dialogue between the two countries' leaders.

It is noteworthy that the last time Moon visited Japan was in June 2019 to attend the G20 summit held in Osaka.
